Cardiomyopathy and role of Homeopathic treatment

Introduction:

The myocardium of the heart can be affected in most types of heart disease. Cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscle or a change in heart muscle structure. It is often associated with inadequate heart pumping.

Causes:

  • Idiopathic: The exact cause is not known
  • Familial: Family history may be present
  • Endomyocardial fibrosis
  • Viral infections
  • Alcoholism
  • Hypertension
  • Heart attacks
  • Autosomal dominant
  • Kidney disease
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Classification of Cardiomyopathies:

1. Dilated Cardiomyopathy: Enlargement of the cavity of the ventricle, low ejection fraction. It can affect young people Dilated cardiomyopathy includes many conditions:

  • Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: Caused by heart attacks
  • Idiopathic cardiomyopathy: Cause is not known
  • Hypertensive cardiomyopathy: This is seen in people who have high blood pressure for a long time
  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy: Caused due to heavy alcohol consumption.

2. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Thickening of the ventricular wall associated with a small cavity. High ejection fraction. Family history is present.

3. Restrictive Cardiomyopathy: Stiff ventricle which restricts filling. Ejection fraction is maintained. The heart cannot relax adequately after each contraction which prevents it from filling with enough blood.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Angina or pain on effort which consists of a feeling of sharp pain and pressure in the middle of the chest.
  • Dyspnea on effort. (Shortness of breath)
  • Syncope or fainting after some physical activity
  • Palpitations: Awareness of heart beats
  • Loss of appetite
  • Less urine during day and needs to urinate at night

Diagnosis:

On examination pulse may be jerky, abnormal heart sounds and breath sounds may be heard. Murmurs may be heard in case of valvular heart disease. Other diagnostic procedures include:

  • C.B.C. (Complete Blood Count)
  • ECG: Electrocardiogram
  • X ray chest
  • Chest M.R.I.
  • 2D Echo
  • Color Doppler Ultrasound
  • Coronary Angiography

Complications:

  • Heart failure
  • Arrhythmia

Scope of Homeopathic Treatment in Cardiomyopathy:

The homeopathic approach is based on the totality of symptoms and individualization of the patient. Homeopathy considers the causations such as genetic, physical, emotional, etc. and treats the disease accordingly.

It treats the person as a whole i.e. his mental and physical symptoms are considered and a medicine is given. It stops the progression of the disease. In chronic diseases after the remedy is administered it will act at a very deep level and will help the individual to fight the disease.

There are certain medicines in Homeopathy which act as a cardiac tonic. This helps in maintaining and improving the ejection fraction.

Homeopathy improves the existing symptoms of angina, dyspnea and palpitations and prevents the further worsening of the patient's heart conditions. Also even if the patient is on some allopathic medicine then those can be tapered off in the step by step manner so that there is minimum dependency on these medicines.

Homeopathy improves the functioning of heart, helps in dissolving the clots and prevents the surgical intervention if the treatment is started in early stages of the condition.
