Anti-Phospholipid Syndrome and Role of Homeopathy

Introduction:

Anti-phospholipid syndrome is a disorder in which your immune system mistakenly produces antibodies to certain proteins in your blood. This disorder can cause clotting within your arteries or veins.

Cause:

It is more common in women than in men. The exact cause is not known. It is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system mistakenly produces antibodies to certain proteins in your blood.

There are two main classifications of Anti-phospholipid syndrome:

Primary. The term "primary anti-phospholipid syndrome" is used when APS occurs in the absence of any other related disease if you have no other autoimmune disorder, you have primary anti-phospholipid syndrome.

Secondary. If you do have any other autoimmune disorder, then you have secondary antiphospholipid syndrome.

The cause of primary antiphospholipid syndrome is unknown. However, some factors are associated with developing antiphospholipid antibodies. They include:

  • Infections: People with syphilis, HIV infection, hepatitis C and malaria, among others, have a higher incidence of having the antibodies.
  • Genetic predispositions: Research indicates that relatives of people with antiphospholipid syndrome are more likely to have antibodies.
  • Medications: Taking certain drugs, such as the high blood pressure medication hydralazine, anti-seizure medication phenytoin and the antibiotic amoxicillin, may lead to an increased risk

Signs and Symptoms:

Whenever there is bleeding due to cut or injury, blood loss is prevented by a process known as clotting or blood coagulation. It involves several bodily substances. Phospholipids, which make up cell membranes, are one of the substances involved.

In case of antiphospholipid syndrome your antibodies mistakenly attack either your phospholipids or proteins in your blood that bind to your phospholipids.

The signs and symptoms you develop with antiphospholipid syndrome depend on where clots form or travel to. A clot that forms or a traveling clot (embolus) may cause:

  • Thrombosis: Blood clots in your legs (deep vein thrombosis). Deep vein thrombosis is a common manifestation of Antiphospholipid syndrome. Sometimes it may occur at unusual sites
  • Blood clots that travel into your lungs (pulmonary embolism)
  • Neurological Features: Stroke is most common. Antiphospholipid syndrome has also been linked with Sneddon's syndrome i.e. recurrent stroke and livedo reticularis. (a red rash with a lacy, net-like pattern) Chronic headaches, including migraines, dementia and seizures are possible when a blood clot obstructs blood flow to your brain.
  • Dementia and cognitive dysfunction such as poor memory can also occur.
  • Pregnancy: Recurrent pregnancy loss is seen with women suffering from APL.
  • APL may also be associated with placental insufficiency and pre-eclampsia
  • Rarely patients present with acute multi organ failure from extensive microvascular thrombosis
Less common signs and symptoms include:
  • Chorea: Movement disorder, in which your body and limbs jerk uncontrollably
  • Cognitive problems, such as poor memory
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Depression

Complications:

Depending on which organ is affected by a blood clot and how severe the obstruction of blood flow to that organ is, untreated antiphospholipid syndrome can lead to permanent damage.

  • SLE, systemic sclerosis
  • Kidney failure
  • Stroke
  • Bechet's disease, temporal arteritis, Sjogrens syndrome
  • Infections- HIV, Varicella, hepatitis C, malaria, Syphilis

Diagnosis: Clinically diagnosis is made on the following criteria.

  • Vascular thrombosis: One or more episodes of arterial, venous or small vessel thrombosis in any tissue or organ confirmed by Doppler studies, imaging or histopathology.
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • Laboratory testing:
  • Antiphospholipid antibody testing.

Role of Homeopathy in Anti-Phospholipid

The role of homeopathy lies in the fact that it can bring back the lost balance in the human body when it is in a diseased state. Homeopathic remedies act at the psycho neuro endocrinal axis. In other words, it stimulates the human body which in turn will take care of the disease.

Homeopathy is an individualized form of treatment so all the aspects of patient's life-social, physical, psychological, emotional are taken into consideration while taking the case history in details.

After careful analysis of the history of the patient, an accurate Homeopathic remedy is prescribed. This medicine will act on the patient and will work at the root cause of the disease without causing any side-effects.

Thus the formation of new clots is prevented in the body and the existing circulating clots are dissolved by the body as Homeopathy rectifies the errors of the immune system. Therefore, the patients taking these Homeopathy medicines will experience a sure, steady, step by step and a long lasting relief in their symptoms.
