Crohn’s Disease and role of Homeopathic treatment and Dietary management

Introduction:

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. It is a non-specific granulomatous inflammation involving sharply demarcated single or multiple areas of intestine.

It can affect any part of the gastro intestinal tract but most commonly affects the terminal ileum or the ileocecal junction. Crohn's disease is related closely to another chronic inflammatory condition that involves only the colon called ulcerative colitis.

Together, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are referred to as inflammatory bowel disease.

Causes:

It occurs when the body's immune system has an abnormal response to normal bacteria in your intestine. Other kinds of bacteria such as Mycobacterium Para tuberculosis may also be responsible for causing the disease

The exact cause is not known. Research has indicated that Crohn's disease has a strong genetic link. The disease runs in families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a parent, sibling or child who also has the disease

Infecting organisms: Mycobacterium para-tuberculosis has been found in tissue of a small number of patients with Crohn's disease

Diet: High intake of refined sugar and low intake of fiber from fruits and vegetables have been reported in patients with Crohn's disease

Smoking: Smokers are more likely to develop the disease than non-smokers

Signs and Symptoms:

Diarrhea: In mild cases stools may be loose or more frequent than usual. But in severe cases the frequency of stools is more, it could be 10 -12 times in a day

Abdominal pain: Inflammation and ulceration causes the walls of your bowel to swell and eventually thicken with scar tissue. This affects the normal movement of food through your digestive tract and may lead to pain and cramping

Blood in stools: Food moving through your digestive tract can cause inflamed tissue to bleed, or your bowel may also bleed on its own

Loss of appetite and weight loss

Fistula or abscess

Complications:

Most people with Crohn's disease lead active lives with few restrictions. Intestinal complications of Crohn's disease include obstruction and perforation of the small intestine, abscesses (collections of pus), fistulae, and intestinal bleeding.

Massive distention or dilatation of the colon (megacolon), and rupture (perforation) of the intestine are potentially life-threatening complications. Both generally require surgery, but, these two complications are rare.

Bleeding from the rectum, weight loss, joint pain, skin problems and fever may also occur. Children with the disease may have growth problems.

The disorder often remains quiet and easily controlled for long periods of time. When Crohn's disease has been present for many years there is an increased risk of cancer.

Diagnosis:

  • Barium X-rays of the small intestine or colon
  • Stool analysis. This is a test to look for blood and signs of infection in a sample of your stool
  • Colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy where a thin, lighted tube is used to look inside the colon
  • Biopsy: A sample of tissue is taken and tested to find out if you have Crohn's or another disease

Role of Homeopathy

The first question that comes to the mind is how these Homeopathic medicines are going to help in fighting the disease. As we all know in a diseased state the internal bodily mechanisms do not work in a harmonious way. So to bring back the lost harmony to its original balanced state the correct Homeopathic medicine has to be given.

The homeopathic medicine acts at 3 levels the Psyche, Neuro, Endocrines at the level of the psyche it helps to bring balance which in turn will affect the neurological balance and the correct secretion of the hormones which play an important role in maintaining the harmonious flow. The homeopathic medicines do not treat the disease but it helps in bringing back the lost imbalance back to its normal state.

To find the correct Homeopathic remedy one needs a complete case study so all the aspects of the emotional nature, Fears, Social relations, family relations, ups and downs in life have to be taken into consideration. Also the past history, problems in adjusting, Family history of any major illnesses have to be mentioned.

Once the correct remedy is given the body starts it own healing process. The Homeopathic remedies stimulate the internal healing mechanism of the body .In this way the patient starts recovering .A proper feedback has to be given by the patient when he is under medication so that the case can be assessed and the desired result is obtained.

Homeopathy acts on 'Individual' in disease rather than the 'disease' in individual. So the correct constitutional remedy that is selected on basis of detailed case history acts at the root cause of disease gently without causing any other side-effects.

It relieves the symptoms of painful frequent diarrhea, abdominal pain and reduces the frequency and severity of symptoms. Also it prevents the further progress of the complaint like ulcers ,perforation and hemorrhage so that the surgical intervention can be avoided.
